A New One from Allison Brennan

The Third to Die by Allison Brennan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I love Allison Brennan’s Max Revere series, and find her Lucy Kincaid thrillers okay, so I wasn’t sure what I was going to get with this new series. I enjoyed the introduction of the FBI’s Mobile Response Team led by Special Agent Mathias Costa, and think I’ve found a new series to read!

Costa and his MRT are sent to Oregon on the trail of the Triple Killer, whose latest victim was just discovered by a vacationing LAPD detective, Kara Quinn. The hunt kept me hooked and I liked the interactions between Costa and his team, as well as the sexual tension created between Costa and Quinn.

Recommended for all fans of thrillers.

Thanks to Edelweiss+ for a digital ARC.

Kate Shugak’s Back

No Fixed Line by Dana Stabenow

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

The original tough lady PI is back and she’s on a mission. Kate Shugak didn’t like Erland Bannister and the feeling was mutual–he tried to kill her a couple of times and she tried to put him in jail before he finally succumbed to cancer. So it makes no sense that he would want her to be the trustee of his charitable foundation, unless he had laid a trap. To complicate things, there’s also the matter of the plane that crashed next to the hot springs with two small children the only survivors. Kate is back, whole and healthy after her previous adventures, and intent on keeping her park and her “children” safe from Outside. Great addition to the series.

Secret Remains

Secret Remains: A Coroner's Daughter Mystery

Secret Remains: A Coroner’s Daughter Mystery by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Secret Remains is the second book in the Coroner’s Daughter series. While it picks up immediately after the first book in the series (The Coroner), it is not necessary to have read the first book in order to enjoy Secret Remains. In fact, I would have enjoyed Secret Remains much more if I hadn’t read the first book (without revealing spoilers, there is a continuity issue between the two books that, while not relevant to the mystery, was major enough to be a niggling annoyance throughout the second book!).

This is the story of a missing girl and the impact secrets have on a small town where people’s lives are interconnected. Emily Hartford has just buried her estranged father, and is thrust into covering his coroner’s duties. In the meantime, she’s dealing with a former fiance in Chicago, a leave of absence from her surgical residency, and suddenly multiple prospective beaus and job offers. Understandably, she’s a little overwhelmed.

Good to read as a standalone mystery or as a follow-up to The Coroner’s cliffhanger ending.

I received a digital ARC via NetGalley.

Coral Reef Views

Coral Reef Views (Ashley Grant #3)

Coral Reef Views by Vicki Delany

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

As a heads-up, this is part of the Rapid Reads line from Orca Books, which are novellas rather than full-length novels. This is the type of book you keep around when reading time is limited.

Ashley Grant is a Canadian paramedic who has relocated to the Caribbean islands. In this book, her parents are visiting, and her bored father starts nosing around after his new friend disappears. I found Coral Reef Views to be an engaging and fun read. Though this is book 3 in a series, it works well as a stand-alone and doesn’t require you to start from the beginning of the series (I haven’t read the preceding two books and had no difficulties jumping in).

I received a copy from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers group.
