The Coroner

The Coroner

The Coroner by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This has been on my TBR list for a while, and I finally picked up a copy when it was on sale at Amazon (hey, when you read as many books as I do, you need to be thrifty!).

They say that you can’t go home again, but for Dr. Emily Hartford, it may be better to say that you must go home again. Emily left town at 16, unable to deal with her father’s silence about her mother’s death and hasn’t returned in 12 years. When her father suffers a major heart attack, she rushes home and gets caught up in a murder investigation. Her father is the town’s coroner and with him out of action, the sheriff (Emily’s high school boyfriend) asks her to conduct the postmortem.

Emily quickly falls back into the rhythms of small time life, and feels a commitment to the victim that she doesn’t feel with her living patients. In pursuing clues to the murder, she realizes that she’s never dealt with the issues that caused her to flee her hometown.

There is a sequel coming out in January, so it’s obvious that there’s more to Emily’s story. Read this first, because I think it will set the stage for the upcoming book

Thin Ice

Thin Ice (Alaska Wild Mysteries #1)

Thin Ice by Paige Shelton

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

As a best-selling author of thrillers, Beth Rivers knows a little something about how to hide, and she runs to Alaska to heal after a harrowing escape from an obsessive fan leaves her with a brain injury. Beth arrives on the heels of the suspicious death of one of the residents, and ends up renting a room at a half-way house for female felons. Before she knows it, she’s taking over the town’s newspaper and helping the sheriff investigate. I enjoyed the book and read it quickly in one day, and am looking forward to future entries in this new series.

I received a digital ARC via NetGalley.
