Forgotten Place by Charles Todd

I’ve read all of the prior Bess Crawford books and was wondering how they would turn out once the Great War ended. This book answers that question, and deals honestly with problems the returning injured soldiers faced. In today’s world where we can communicate almost instantly with a text, it was interesting to see how isolated small towns could be in the early 1900’s as Bess is stranded without mail or transportation. I struggled to finish the last book in the series, but thought that Forgotten Place regained the readability of the earlier novels.

I received a free copy from LibraryThing’s Early Reviewers.

Derailed (Maria Kallio #10)

This is the first Maria Kallio book that I’ve read, and I was favorably impressed. While this is the most recent in a 10-book series, it was relatively easy to pick up the background and not feel lost (though I think I’ll appreciate Maria’s reluctance more after I read the previous books, not having that knowledge didn’t detract from this story). Maria is a refreshing addition to the police procedural–a mother, a cop, and a wife who has to play different roles as her day progresses. I highly recommend this book and I plan to check out the earlier novels.

I received the book for free through Goodreads Giveaways.
